Frequently Asked Questions

We have pulled some of our most frequently asked questions and compiled them all into one place for your convenience!  Should you have any other questions that we may have missed, don’t hesitate to reach out!

Q.  What is Lacrosse?

A. Lacrosse is a team sport played with a Lacrosse stick and a lacrosse ball. Lacrosse originates from the indigenous people of North America, from as early as the 12th century. Lacrosse players use the head of their lacrosse stick to carry, pass, catch, and shoot the ball into the lacrosse goals. Men’s lacrosse and women’s lacrosse are quite different, with rules and game plays differing between the two – some say the games are very different indeed!

Q.  How many people play in a Lacrosse team?

A. 10 Lacrosse players from each team are allowed on the field (three offence, three defence, three midfielders, and one goalie). However, teams are made up of more players to facilitate substitutions (i.e. to give everyone a rest!)

Q. Where are you located?

A. You can find us down at Leatherback Oval, in Alkimos!

Q. What days do you train/play?

A. We train on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, with games taking place on Saturdays (mens games) and Sundays (womens games). Training/game day start times will depend on what team you are in, so please look out for that information as it becomes available!

Q. When does the Lacrosse season take place?

A. Lacrosse is a winter sport, so we play from late April to about early September. We do however start our preseason training earlier than this, typically from February onwards. As specific dates can vary from year to year, your best bet will be to keep up to date with preseason and season dates through our social media or on our website.

Q. I have never played Lacrosse before; is this right for me?

A. YES! At the Alkimos Pirates Lacrosse Club, we pride ourselves on our inclusivity and our welcoming environment to people of all backgrounds. Whether you are completely new to the game or a seasoned professional, you will fit right in!

Q. What equipment do I need to be able to play Lacrosse?

A. If you are a male player, you will need a men’s Lacrosse stick, a Lacrosse helmet, Lacrosse gloves, and a mouthguard. If you are a female player, you will need a women’s Lacrosse stick, Lacrosse goggles, and a mouthguard. All Under 11s and Under 13s players play the men’s version of the game, therefore they will need to wear equipment applicable to the men’s game.

Q. Do you have teams for all ages?

A. Short answer, it depends! Long answer…in Western Australia, lacrosse teams are grouped as follows: Under 11s (mixed/men’s rules), Under 13s (mixed/men’s rules), Under 14s (mixed/women’s rules), Under 15s (men), Under 17s (mens), Under 17s (womens), and our senior teams. Each year we aim to field teams in as many of these categories as we can, however this is solely based on how many people register for teams each year. If we do not have enough under 13s, for example, we simply cannot field a team. This is why it is so important to invite as many people down to the club and spread the word on the awesome game of lacrosse!

Q. Do you offer payment plans?

A. Yes we do! We understand the difficulties people may face when it comes to paying for sports fees, so we offer flexible plans to any player that may need it. Please contact our treasurer when you receive your invoice and we will be happy to discuss options with you! We are also proudly apart of the KidSport initiative, where the state government covers up to $300 worth of sports fees for eligible children. Find out more info here.
